 PRESSURE

Pressure measurement is the analysis of an applied force by a fluid (liquid or gas) on a surface. Pressure is typically measured in units of force per unit of surface area.

·         Absolute pressure is zero-referenced against a perfect vacuum, using an absolute scale, so it is equal to gauge pressure plus atmospheric pressure.

·         Gauge pressure is zero-referenced against ambient air pressure, so it is equal to absolute pressure minus atmospheric pressure. Negative signs are usually omitted. To distinguish a negative pressure, the value may be appended with the word “vacuum” or the gauge may be labelled a “vacuum gauge”. These are further divided into two subcategories: high and low vacuum (and sometimes ultra-high vacuum). The applicable pressure ranges of many of the techniques used to measure vacuums have an overlap. Hence, by combining several different types of gauge, it is possible to measure system pressure continuously from 10 mbar down to 10−11 mbar.

·         Differential pressure is the difference in pressure between two points.

TEMPERATURE
 Temperature measurement and control devices must periodically be calibrated in order to prove their accuracy over the full operating temperature range and according to the device’s data sheet definitions. Proven accuracy is mandatory because inaccurate readings can lead to a false sense of security and at risk. Temperature plays an important role Even a slight variation in the required temperature can affect the quality of the product and compromise its safety. Thus, temperature calibration is important and critical for many applications. Temperature maintenance is also critical. This is why you need temperature sensors. Some examples of temperature sensors include thermistors, thermocouple probes, RTDs and thermal imaging cameras. They help in temperature mapping, which further helps in determining whether or not the right temperature is being maintained during all the processes and through all the stages.

ACOUSTICS

A sound level meter is used for acoustic (sound that travels through air) measurements. It is commonly a hand-held instrument with a microphone. The diaphragm of the microphone responds to changes in air pressure caused by sound waves. Proper usage of sound level meter is extremely important because it ensures that all sound exposures are below the threshold of what is considered safe for human ears. For this reason, it is vital to ensure that all sound level meters used on jobs sites have been properly calibrated to assure sound wave measurements are accurate.

Due to the serious health issues that can be caused from high noise levels and the frail structure of a sound level meter, it is crucial to have sound level meter calibration performed frequently. It is imperative that all measurements taken by a sound level meter are accurate and reliable to ensure safety of personnel.

MASS

As with any measurement instruments, weighing instruments should also be calibrated regularly to assure that they are measuring correctly and accurately. A proper metrologicaL calibration is the only way to know how accurately weighing instruments are measuring. In a weighing test, using multiple points through the measurement range of the instrument helps to reveal any issues with linearity. Linearity issues means that the instrument does not measure equally accurate throughout the range. Even the zero and full span are correct, there may be errors in the middle of the range, which is referred as linearity errors, or nonlinearity.

ACCELERATION & SPEED

Tachometers are widely used to measure revolutions, or the rotational speed of objects within a range of equipment and applications. One of the best examples of these devices are in the motorized vehicles, aerospace industry, pharmaceutical industry etc where they measure RPM of rotating machinery. Other applications include measuring or calculating materials sold by length with FPM or processed using centrifuges, and within operations utilizing conveyor systems for process speed.

Whichever application or process you need to measure or control, it’s important to have a calibrated tachometer to ensure accuracy in operation.

TORQUE

Torque is a measure of the force that can cause an object to rotate about an axis. Just as force is what causes an object to accelerate in linear kinematics, torque is what causes an object to acquire angular acceleration. A torque wrench is a tool that can measure the tension and twist of nuts and bolts to ensure that they are tight enough without over-tightening them. This instrument looks like a long-armed wrench which bends when you apply the turning force to the handle.

Its handle contains an internal mechanical indicator which is connected to a calibrated scale. You must stop twisting the bolt as soon as the indicator determines that you have reached the desired torque. Just like any other measuring instrument, precise calibration of a torque wrench is important to provide accurate results.

No matter how well you have calibrated your torque wrench, it will lose its accuracy over a period of time. This means that you must constantly calibrate to ensure that it stays accurate and provides you with the perfect results.

GAS

Gas monitoring instruments are designed to protect personnel from unseen hazards that may exist in workplace environments, including confined spaces. It is vital to worker safety that these instruments are maintained and calibrated properly. The only way to guarantee that an instrument will detect gas accurately and reliably is to test it with a known concentration of gas. Exposing the instrument to a known concentration of test gas will show whether the sensors respond accurately and whether the instrument alarms function properly.

Gas detectors measure the concentration of a gas in an air sample by comparing the sensor’s response to the response generated by a calibration gas of a known concentration. The instrument’s response to the calibration gas serves as the measurement scale or reference point.
